Spring Heather

Getting Mail

I like getting mail where the sender has taken the time to hand write the address and placed actual stamps on the envelope or parcel, postage that looks like a label is so boring!

The sender may have chosen the stamps because they liked the picture on the stamp or thought you would.

In any case, I think it makes receiving mail more exciting!

Fish photography

Awhile ago I bought  goldfish to use as "models" in one of the projects for the Photography Club.  My idea didn't work as I couldn't figure out how to get a good clear image.

Today when I came home from work, the afternoon light reflecting off  the orange chair behind the fish bowl seemed to bring out the colours of the fish. I figured I should at least get a couple of shots while it's still in the house.

When the weather warms up, this little guy will go out to the fish pond in the garden and swim with the big guys!

My Boys

It seems most evenings when I want to do something on my computer, one of our two cats feels it is necessary for them to keep me company or "help me out".

Tonight they both felt I needed help with my work!

It started with Tango

Then Jazz decided to join.

I decided it was time for bed!  Good night!

Snow

This photo of our back garden was taken  March 11th.  Though technically it is still winter for another 10 days and this is our first real snow fall this winter, I much prefer the coming of Spring... which is now only 7 days away.

Fire

The photography group I belong to decided the project for this weeks get together would be fire.

Sounds easy at first, candles on a cake, flaming marshmallows, glowing sticks being twirled around in the dark... I decided that I would make images of flames in a glass vessel and my accelerant would be alcohol, like the kind you drink. However when trying to transpose thoughts into reality, it doesn't always go as planned, apparently vodka does not have a high enough percentage of alcohol.

So now what! I'm determined that this is what I want to do. My husband is brilliant, he suggests hand sanitizer which is 60% alcohol and that fact that it's in a gel helps to keep the alcohol from burning off too fast.

My studio is the dining room table.  The ambiant lighting comes from a small table lamp on the left and 3 tea lights on the right.  I squirt the sanitizer into the holders light 'em up and voila! Blue flames!

The camera settings for the first image,  ISO 500,  aperture f5.6 shutter 1/2 sec.  The White balance set to 2550 K.   The second image the settinger are, ISO 500, aperture f 10 shutter 4 sec and the white balance 2500 K.

In photoshop I increased the vibrance and saturation to enhance the flame. For the second image I adjusted the hue & saturation which brought up the red glow in the glass rocks.

Oranges

For as long as I can remember,  I have always had an orange to start my day.

I remember as a little girl sitting at the kitchen table eating an orange that my mom would have cut into quarters and put into a small plastic bowl.

Good eating habits start early!
